The front of the coin immediately establishes its identity, featuring a detailed Orange County Sheriff's Department investigator badge. The number "187," the California penal code for homicide, is prominently displayed, leaving no doubt about the challenge coin's connection to the most serious of crimes. This side represents the official authority and the sworn duty of the investigators who carry it. Originally, a similar challenge coin was created only for investigators within the homicide detail, but Detective Taft wanted to create a version that specifically honored the unique work of the cold case unit.

The Buzzard and the Skull

The back of the challenge coin offers a stark and symbolic look into the world of cold case investigations. In this updated design, you’ll find the signature buzzard perched alongside a skull and the investigator’s badge—all elements now blanketed in snow. This striking addition gives the scene a chilling sense of time gone by and unresolved mysteries, while cleverly paying homage to the original coin’s cactus and desert landscape. This grim imagery was adapted from an original logo drawn by an artist within the homicide detail back in 1999. It’s a frank euphemism for investigating deaths in remote areas, where victims are often discovered as skeletonized remains long after their passing.

It is here that Detective Taft added his personal, defining touch. Inscribed above and below the haunting scene are the words that have become the mantra for his life's work: "I speak for those that no longer have a voice." This powerful phrase transforms the challenge coin from a simple emblem of a unit into a personal creed. It’s a promise to the nameless and the forgotten that their stories will be told and that someone is still fighting for them.

A 50-Year-Old Mystery Solved

For nearly 50 years, the identity of a man found in rural Orange County remained unknown. For decades, the case went cold. But in 2023, a breakthrough came through the use of Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG). This revolutionary technique allows investigators to build family trees from DNA evidence, ultimately leading to an identification. The 1974 John Doe was finally given a name. Incredibly, his 90-year-old mother was still alive. After nearly five decades of uncertainty, she finally learned what happened to her son.

It is moments like these that fuel the relentless spirit of cold case investigators. The ability to provide closure, to restore a name to the nameless, is the ultimate reward for years of painstaking work. As Detective Taft explained, this work is about providing "...their loved one a name again, as opposed to just being a number."
