On Wednesday, July 5th, Detective Miosotis Familia, of the New York Police Department, was ambushed, shot, and killed. Detective Miosotis was sitting in a marked police vehicle when an assailant fired a single round from a revolver through the window; striking her fatally. The male suspect was confronted by officers that responded to the chaos. The responding officers exchanged further gunfire with the subject, killing him and ending his act of terror.
This tragic and unprovoked attack on Detective Familia has impacted departments and families across the country. Hundreds of thousands of individuals have rallied behind Detective Familia's family and memory; showing unity for the best of our nation's best. Thousands of officers and citizens gathered for Detective Familia's funeral on July 11th in New York City.
Police Commissioner James O'Neill gave a touching and important tribute, "This amazing woman; this mother; this daughter; this sister; this friend; this New York City police officer was assassinated solely because of what she represented and for the responsibility, she embraced,”. Detective Miosotis is survived by her three children who gave a powerful and emotional speech the night of the funeral, "But I know when she went to work that night, when she sat in that truck, that she had me and my siblings in her heart, and she had love in her heart.”
Detective Familia was taken from us because of the uniform she wore and her promise to keep our country safe. Every officer across the country has heard her story and has been inspired by the amazing life she led. At Thin Blue Line USA, we began a fundraiser to directly support the children of Detective Familia. Within a few days, the country had come together to show their unity and respect for Detective Familia, and helped us donate $6,666.61 to the Police Officer Miosotis Familia Fund of the Daily News Charities.
“I want her legacy to be filled with love,” said Detective Miosotis' sister Mercedes Proefrock. “If you see a police officer, hug them and say thank you.”
