Susan's Journey: Honoring Officer Michael Krol Through a Lasting Tribute

When Officer Michael Krol of the Dallas Police Department was tragically killed in the line of duty on July 7, 2016, his mother, Susan Ehlke, faced an unimaginable loss that changed her life. Michael had dedicated his life to serving his community, first with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office in Michigan for five years and then with the Dallas Police Department for nine more years. Known for his kindness, dedication, and unwavering commitment to his duty, Michael was tragically killed during a protest in Dallas, a day that claimed the lives of five officers.

After Michael’s passing, Susan wanted to create something special to honor his memory — a challenge coin that would capture Michael’s spirit, his bravery, and his love for his community. Yet, like many families of fallen officers, she found it challenging to bring this tribute coin to life.

A Solution Through Thin Blue Line USA's Challenge Coin Club

Recognizing that many families share this experience, Thin Blue Line USA created the Challenge Coin Club program to provide a solution. Our mission is to help families like Susan's by partnering with them to design and produce a custom challenge coin that reflects their loved one’s legacy and service. These coins are donated to the families at no cost, giving them a meaningful way to commemorate their hero and share their story with others.

When Susan connected with us, we collaborated closely to create a beautiful coin in Michael’s honor. The coin features the badges from both the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Dallas Police Department, along with his Foxtrot Special Unit. For Susan, this coin is more than just a symbol; it is a powerful way to keep Michael’s memory alive and share his story with others.

Michael Krol: The Gentle Giant with a Heart of Gold

Michael was known for his big heart and gentle nature. Standing at six feet four inches, he was often affectionately called the "Gentle Giant" by his fellow officers. His great smile and warm greeting of "be safe" left a lasting impression on those around him. Michael was always willing to help others, whether it was comforting a fellow officer’s family after an injury or attending the funerals of fallen colleagues — something Susan didn’t fully understand until after his own passing.

“He always wanted to protect others, to keep them safe,” Susan recalls. “Michael was not only a dedicated officer, but he was also a wonderful son, brother, and friend who made everyone feel valued and secure.”

Sharing Michael’s Legacy Through the Challenge Coin

Now, with the help of the Challenge Coin Club, Susan can share Michael’s story with others. Each time she gives out his coin, she sees the impact it has. “When I give Michael’s coin to someone, I see their genuine emotion, sometimes even tears,” Susan says. “It’s a beautiful way to honor his service and ensure he is never forgotten.”

The coins have allowed her to connect with others, share Michael’s story, and keep his spirit alive in a tangible way that brings comfort and pride.

Expanding the Impact: Supporting Other Families and Agencies

Susan’s experience is just one example of how the Challenge Coin Club makes a difference. Each month, we feature a different fallen officer or authentic coin from a law enforcement agency, creating a unique tribute that celebrates their service. We then donate these coins to the featured families, allowing them to share their loved one’s legacy with pride.

In addition to supporting families, the Challenge Coin Club also honors law enforcement agencies nationwide by featuring their authentic coins. We donate these challenge coins back to the agencies we feature, supporting their work and community efforts.

How the Challenge Coin Club Works

Every month, members of the Challenge Coin Club receive a new coin — either in tribute to a fallen officer like Michael or representing a law enforcement agency. By subscribing to the club, members not only receive a special coin each month but also help support a program that gives back to featured families and agencies, ensuring their stories and legacies continue to be celebrated.

Join Us in Honoring Their Legacy

By joining the Challenge Coin Club, you become part of a community dedicated to recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of law enforcement officers.
