by Kelleigh Lamb June 01, 2018

Deputy Sheriff William J. Gentry was shot on May 7, 2018, while responding to an animal abuse call. He succumbed to his wound the following day.

Deputy Sheriff William Gentry was 40 years old and is survived by his brother. He served with the Highlands County Sheriff's Office for nine years.

We launched our Give Blue Fundraiser to show our support for the community of Highlands County. We send our deepest thanks to everyone that took part and continues to wear their Thin Blue Line Bracelet in honor of Deputy Gentry.

"You were a hero in your short time with us, and you will always be a hero to those you saved with your departing,” - Highlands County Sheriff Paul Blackman, WFLA-TV

A total donation of $2,120.88 was donated to the Rescue Rancha 501 (C) (3) non-profit animal welfare organization, as requested by the family.

God bless you, William Gentry. May you rest in peace.
